The son of Simnon Rasmusson and Bolette Nielsdatter, shopkeepers, he was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. At the age of fourteen, he was apprenticed to a master decorative painter and began to take drawing lessons at the Royal Danish Academy* of Fine Arts.
