Nunzio Stefano was born in the province of L'Aquila. He completed his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome under Toti Scialoja in 1977 with a diploma in stage design. His first exhibition took place in 1981 in a Roman gallery, many more followed. At the Venice Biennale in 1986 he was winner of the Premio 2000 as the best young artists in the show, in 1998 Nunzio was awarded the Premio Presidente della Repubblica. His first exhibition took place in 1981 in a Roman gallery, many more followed. At the Venice Biennale in 1986 he was winner of the Premio 2000 as the best young artists in the show, in 1998 Nunzio was awarded the Premio Presidente della Repubblica. Since 2008 he is a member of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca. Nunzio, who now lives and works in Rome, deals in his sculptural work with the formal possibilities of different materials such as wood, plaster and lead and explores their material and immaterial effect as related to light and space.
