After completing his studies, Otto Gussmann became known for his architecture-related painting in the Berlin Reichstag and was appointed professor at the ornament school of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. Gussmann was a member of the Dresden Association of Fine Artists, the first Dresden Secession, and a founding member of the Dresden Artists' Association.
