After the First World War Nagel began to paint his first works under the influence of August Macke (1887-1914), immersing himself in the Berlin art scene more and more; Heinrich Zille and Käthe Kollwitz were among his close friends. At the same time Nagel became increasingly communist in his political belief, leading the Nazis to invalidate his election to chairman of the Reichsverband der Bildenden Künstler Deutschlands one day after the fact.
