He was educated at Christ's College, where he had his first formal art lessons, and continued those studies at the Canterbury College School of Art (1903) and in London (1905-6). During a return visit to New Zealand in 1907-9, he held solo exhibitions in Wellington and Christchurch, and participated in art society shows. He met Dorothy Kate Richmond, the doyenne of the Wellington art scene, and her nephew Esmond Atkinson, who was also a painter.
