In 1965, he founded the ZEBRA group with Dieter Asmus, Nikolaus Störtenbecker and Dietmar Ullrich, which stood for a new realism in Germany. Nagel used media imagery with the Zebra Group and developed "a kind of West German version of American pop art for the post-war society."
