Born in 1962 in Beijing, China, Yin Qi graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1987, and taught at the affiliated high school after graduation. He later resumed his studies of art at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris from 1989 to 1991 and at the Institutede Haute Etude en Arts Plastiques from 1996 to 1997.
