Richard Baquié's sculpture follows in the footsteps of the Dada group and Nouveau Réalisme, influenced by Kurt Schwitters and Jean Tinguely. Schwitters' assemblages, mixing objects and words, and Tinguely's automated sculptures, critical of consumer society, are reflected in his creations, which exploit industrial materials and everyday waste. Born in Marseille, Baquié shaped his poetic universe through a variety of jobs, from truck driver to welder, before entering the Beaux-Arts de Luminy art school in 1975. His machines, created from objects salvaged from rubbish dumps, evoke transport and road signs, animated by sounds, movements and words about solitude, displacement and passion.
