Robert Archibald Antonius Jean Graafland was born in Maastricht the Netherlands on 26th November 1875. His father, Johan Graafland, an aristocrat, was owner of a bank but also published two large illustrated books on heraldry, Limburgsche Wapens (Coats of Arms of Families in Limburg) in cooperation with J.M.v.d. Venne and Encyclopédie Héraldique (Encyclopedia of Heraldry), the latter both in French and Dutch which was finished by A. Stalins after his death. In addition, Johan created heraldic... His father, Johan Graafland, an aristocrat, was owner of a bank but also published two large illustrated books on heraldry, Limburgsche Wapens (Coats of Arms of Families in Limburg) in cooperation with J.M.v.d. Venne and Encyclopédie Héraldique (Encyclopedia of Heraldry), the latter both in French and Dutch which was finished by A. Stalins after his death. In addition, Johan created heraldic wooden boards by burning and colouring coats of arms. After the bank was dissolved in 1890, the Graafland family - five boys and three girls - moved to Amsterdam where Rob Graafland attended two schools at the same time: the Rijksnormaalschool voor...
