He devoted much of his energy to criticism and it is as a critic that he is chiefly remembered. He was hampered by a stodgy Quaker background and upbringing and burdened with a great personal tragedy, which was the insanity of his wife. He was a curator of paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for five years and then returned to London.
