After the war he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and continued in Paris with Fernand Leger. In 1951 he went to Germany to teach at Werkkunstschule Wuppertal. During WWII he was in the U.S. Army and was wounded in Italy while his parents spent the duration of the war in an internment camp. After the war he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and continued in Paris with Fernand Leger. In 1951 he went to Germany to teach at Werkkunstschule Wuppertal. Primarily a sculptor, he also was a painter and cinemaphotographer. In 1955 he won a Golden Palm at Cannes for his short film "The Vipers."
