He finally settled in Rutherford, New Jersey, but maintained a summer studio in Woodland Valle, near Phoenicia, New York. He was largely self taught, but his activity in the Philadelphia Sketch Club, 1873 to 1876, suggests he was a student of Thomas Eakins.
