In terms of style and motifs, Barker clearly followed his famous teacher Vernet. In addition to detailed battle scenes Barker also created genre scenes, and portraits. In 1870/71 Barker was present at the Franco-German front, where he was inspired to battle scenes. His works were exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1835 to 1845 and at the London Royal... Thomas Jones Barker (1815-1882) was a student of Horace Vernet in Paris, before settling in England to become a well-established history painter. In terms of style and motifs, Barker clearly followed his famous teacher Vernet. In addition to detailed battle scenes Barker also created genre scenes, and portraits. In 1870/71 Barker was present at the Franco-German front, where he was inspired to battle scenes. His works were exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1835 to 1845 and at the London Royal Academy from 1844 to 1876. Examples of his artistic output are today preserved, for instance, at the British Museum or the Manchester City Hall. (cbo)
