Macdonald was self-taught in art and had a close friendship with painters J D Fergusson and Josef Herman. He began his association with the stage in the 1940s, directing and designing sets for Unity Theatre and Scottish Opera. Macdonald also gave art lectures for Glasgow University and exhibited his work in various galleries. He passed away, and his memorial exhibition was held at the Third Eye Centre in Glasgow. The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art holds his artwork.
