Binder came in contact with the orientalist painter Camille Boiry before 1890, and in 1890 he embarked on an extended trip to Upper Egypt. In 1891 he settled in the then famous seaside resort of Cairo, Helwan. A stay in Istanbul followed in 1894, and in 1895/96 he went to Alexandria and Cairo.
