In 1945 he founded GO AM in Seoul, an institution for painting, where he taught sumi-é, a special technique of ink drawing with predominantly landscape motifs. In search of his family members, now domiciled in North Korea, he returned to his homeland in 1967 after a stay in East Berlin, whereupon he was accused of espionage and imprisoned.
