The artist, who is especially known for his seascapes, was born in Trabzon and studied at the Berlin Academy from 1891 onwards, whereby he was a pupil of Eugen Bracht and Hans Gude. After his studies, he traveled to the Crimea and met the artist Ivan Aivazovsky. In 1895, Makhokian returned to Trabzon and witnessed the Hamidian massacres.
