A native of Dresden, Volker Stelzmann quit his job as a precision engineer in 1963 to study at the Hochschule für Grafik in Leipzig, where he taught since the mid-1970s. He was a member of the board of the Berufsverbandes Bildender Künstler of the GDR. He emigrated to West Germany in 1986 and started working as a professor at the Hochschule der Künste in West Berlin.
