Waldemar Grzimek was born in East Prussia and moved with his family to Berlin in 1924. He began his artistic training with an apprenticeship for becoming a stonemason. He soon switched in favor of studying at the 'Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst' in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Already at that time Grzimek met a number of important sculptors like Gustav Seitz, Fritz Cremer and Gerhard Marcks, with whom he developed a lifelong friendship. He soon switched in favor of studying at the 'Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst' in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Already at that time Grzimek met a number of important sculptors like Gustav Seitz, Fritz Cremer and Gerhard Marcks, with whom he developed a lifelong friendship. Since 1948 Grzimek was a professor at the HBK Berlin-Charlottenburg, which was extended by a teaching position at the TU Darmstadt between 1967 and 1984 and finally at the HBK in Berlin-Weißensee.
