Willem van Bemmel was born in Utrecht in 1630. He was the younger brother of landscape painter Jacob Gerritsz van Bemmel (1628-1673), of Utrecht. Both studied under Herman Saftleven between 1645 and 1647. Willem also travelled to Italy, spending the years 1647-1649 in Venice, and 1649-1653 in Rome.
