Artistically inclined as a child, he began sketching and painting the area around his home in the Klickitat Valley. He opened his first studio in Portland in 1867. After 20 years there, he closed the studio and spent several years in the wilds of Oregon, Washington, and California. His landscapes of Mt Hood, Mt Shasta, Crater Lake, and other scenic spots on the Pacific Coast brought him great national renown before his death near Goldendale, WA on June 7, 1915.
