In 1948 he travelled to Madrid for the first time, where he discovered the immense pictorial treasure of the Prado Museum, but also that of the Museum of Modern Art, the Sorolla House and the paintings of El Greco in Toledo. Thanks to various scholarships he was able to study in Madrid, enrolling in free drawing classes at the Círculo de Bellas Artes and the Museo de Reproducciones Artísticas.
