Yasemin Tomakan was born in California and was raised by an American/Hungarian mother who was both an illustrator of textile design, china and product packaging – and by her Turkish father. Her mother’s sister was a fashion illustrator and costume designer for MGM, and Yasemin was very influenced by the stories she had heard as a child of her aunt. Her mother’s sister was a fashion illustrator and costume designer for MGM, and Yasemin was very influenced by the stories she had heard as a child of her aunt. Raised in Ankara, Turkey, as an only child, she spent much of her time watching her mother at work who encouraged her to draw and paint. Yasemin finished her schooling in New York City, attending the Art Student’s League in Manhattan during summers, 1971-1973 and graduating from The Cooper Union of Art and Engineering, having attended 1977-1981.
