Youngkyo has stated that he aims to create simplistic forms so that the public may view his works “with a feeling of ease in their heart”. Born in 1946 in Jecheon, North Chungcheong Province, South Korea, Youngkyo trained as a sculptor at Hongik University before moving to Rome, where he attended the Department of Plastic Arts of the Accademia di Belle Arti.
