He was born in Deerfield, Massachusetts and attended Amherst College. In the 1930s, he moved to La Jolla, California and was a student of Roi Clarkson Colman. Reportedly he also taught lithography classes at the University of Arizona. In the mid 1940s, he settled in Maine, living at Port Clyde and Monhegan Island, where he died in 1980.
