He was also an illustrator and screen printer. He studied at the Syracuse University School of Art in New York and later in Paris in 1932 with Andre Lhote, Fernand Leger, and Marcel Gromaire. Settling in New York City, he became a founding member of the American Abstract Artists. In the 1930s and 40s, he worked for the New York City WPA Project and was widely exhibited.
