His birth name was Frederick Maxfield Parrish, and he later adopted the name Maxfield. His birth name was Frederick Maxfield Parrish, and he later adopted the name Maxfield. His father, Stephen Parrish, was a successful landscape painter and etcher, and he and Maxfield's mother, Elizabeth Bancroft Parrish, encouraged their son's artistic talent.
