Susan attended high school in California at Idyllwild School and later studied photography at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. She tried working as a photographer in Kansas City, but deciding to be a potter, returned to the Pueblo. Subsequently she moved to a northern New Mexico village of El Rito, and then to Tucson, Arizona. Her skill was recognized at the 2000 Indian Market in Santa Fe where she received the Best of Non traditional Pottery award for her Harry Potter vase with images from the popular series.
