Berlant was born in New York City in 1941 but moved to California at a young age. He studied at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles for one year in 1959. He then attended the University of California Los Angeles from which he graduated with a Master's Degree in Fine Art in 1964. While Berlant studied art as an undergraduate, he became interested in collage and influenced by prolific artists at the time such as Robert Rauschenberg and Edward Kleinholz.
