Following his studies, Sanderson found work as an illustrator for publications including The New Yorker magazine. He exhibited in New York and held a one-man show sponsored by the Contemporary American Artists Gallery in 1931. Sanderson relocated to Colorado in 1946 when he took a position at the University of Denver as an advertising design instructor. The artist remained with the University until 1972.
