He began as a student of architecture, then still in his twenties, he became principal of the New England School of Design. But before long he had to resign, in order to travel to Europe. He began as a student of architecture, then still in his twenties, he became principal of the New England School of Design. But before long he had to resign, in order to travel to Europe. He discovered the art treasures of Paris before entering the Royal Academy of Antwerp*. Already at the age of twenty-nine Bellows was named an honorary member of the Royal Society of Painters of Belgium, the same year he was elected as Associate of the National Academy of Design. Two years later, in 1861 he became a full Academician (the NAD has his Landscape dated that year) and his works were on display... Read full biography
