Kepes studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest where he studied painting under Istvan Csok during the 1920's. Kepes was invited to join the design studio of Hungarian photographer Laszo Mohonly-Nagy in Berlin. He then followed Mohonly to London in 1936.
