From 1844 to 1847, he lived in Patterson, New Jersey, his birthplace. From 1865 to 1873 he was in New York City, and then lived in Roundout, New York, and Hartford, Connecticut. In Talbot's landscape paintings he, adhering to the tenets of the Hudson River School group, strove to express spirituality through landscape imagery. Much of his inspiration came from the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
