Maren Margrethe Froelich was born in Fresno, CA of Danish parents on June 28, 1868. Froelich studied art in San Francisco in the studio of William Keith and at the School of Design under Virgil Williams, Emil Carlsen, Amédée Joullin, and Arthur Mathews. While at that school, her paintings were awarded two gold medals. During 1907-11 she further studied in Paris with Theodore Steinlen, Richard Miller, and at Académie Castelluccio. Froelich studied art in San Francisco in the studio of William Keith and at the School of Design under Virgil Williams, Emil Carlsen, Amédée Joullin, and Arthur Mathews. While at that school, her paintings were awarded two gold medals. During 1907-11 she further studied in Paris with Theodore Steinlen, Richard Miller, and at Académie Castelluccio. During her Parisian stay, she switched from the low key of previous work to the brighter palette of Impressionism. She lived in San Francisco most of her adult life and taught at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute (1902-03). Active with the Carmel art colony, she often painted and exhibited there.
