He emigrated to the United States in the mid 1980s and began painting landscapes en plein air. He opened a gallery in Santa Barbara in 1989. In the same year Waterhouse's twenty year old son from his first marriage died. In the process of healing, Waterhouse found himself spending more time out of the studio painting plein-air landscapes.
