Born 16 September 1924 in Lexington, North Carolina, I grew up during the Depression. My father died when I was 5 years old. Mother went to work, and I was raised by a grandmother who lived with us. She died when I was eight and she was 88. I always loved old photos, even then, and later based the work for which I became well-known on them ("Family Album"). I went to Ringling... I went to Ringling Art School in Sarasota, Florida for two years and then to New York City where I worked in the famous House of Heyduryk, first in the workshops, and then in the show room, meeting many famous artists, architects, composers, writers from Europe who had...
