He received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at the University of Louisville in 1980 and Northwestern University in 1990. Gilliam came to Washington, D.C. in 1962 to join the second generation of Washington Color Painters*. Like the first generation of the group, which included Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland, Gilliam has an interest in the qualities of color, applying acrylic* to unprimed canvas.
