This artwork is part of a series of thirty-six works by Walter which detailed images of immigrants at Ellis Island, New York in the 1920s. The paintings were exhibited in 1922 in the Galerie George in Paris. The series subsequently appeared in 1923 at the Art Institute of Chicago.

This artwork is included in the Catalogue Raisonne of Bannister's work compiled by Anne Louise Avery.

"Burning of the Mississippi" In the midst of the Civil War, the "Mississippi" ran aground in an attempt by Adm Farragut to create a blockade NW of Pt Hudson. She was burned by the crew to prevent her from falling to the Confederacy. The Mississippi was the flagship of Commodore Perry’s voyage to Japan.

Fort Dumpling on Conanicut Island was erected in 1798 to protect the entrance to Rhode Island, Narragansett Bay. The beauty and iconic nature of the fortification was depicted by many 19th Century artists, including William Trost Richards who built a home nearby.
