Hauk Fine Arts offers a curated selection of early and contemporary art, with a strong emphasis on California and the Monterey Peninsula. The gallery's known for presenting works reflecting the cultural exchange between visual artists and literary and scientific figures of their time.
Among gallery contemporary artists, Belle Yang's known for three acclaimed novels, including Baba, a Return to China Upon My Father's Shoulders, and nine children's books. Warren Chang's fieldworker oils reflect and comment on current agricultural labor conditions. Like Yang, he's museum exhibited often.
C. Kline's a daring expressionist, Joao de Brito finds connections between Calfornia landscape and his Portuguese roots, Michael Katakis' photography is held by the British Library, Melissa Sullivan's woodcuts focus on wildlife.
Steve Hauk wrote the book Steinbeck – the Untold Stories, and the PBS-telecast, award winning films Time Captured in Paintings, the Monterey Legacy and The Roots of California Photography, the Monterey Legacy, both narrated by Jack Lemmon.
His play on E. Charlton Fortune, Fortune's Way, or Notes on Art for Catholics and Others, has been done often, including at the the Monterey and Crocker museums of art and Carmel Mission Basilica.
A display of images and documents relating to the life and work of John Steinbeck, pointing out the Nobel Prize winnng author's close connection with acclaimed artists such as Maynard Dixon, Armin Hansen, James Fitzgerald, Bruce Ariss, Judith Deim, Ellwood Graham and Peggy Worthington Best.
The display includes the author in 1942 applying for a New York State license to carry a gun for "self protection," a story recounted in the book Steinbeck – the Untold Stories. One of Steinbeck's character witnesses was yet another artist, painter Henry Varnum Poor, as well as actor Burgess Meredith, who had starred in the film version of Of Mice and Men.
