George Cochran Lambdin was born in Pittsburgh but from around the age of ten lived in Philadelphia. He exhibited regularly at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia from 1848 to 1888 and was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in 1868.
Herzog was a prolific painter who had made a fortune through investments in the Pennsylvania Railroad and painted strictly for pleasure. His paintings are artistic experiments in capturing the changing effects of light and atmosphere and varieties of terrain.
This rare oil painting by the artist represents Bass Rocks, one of the landmarks near the art colony Gloucester on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, that was a popular subject for the many artists who frequented the area.
