Evident in the head of the deer is Landseer's early interest in the romantic and sensitive rendering of animals with humanistic characteristics. The Russian Red Deer depicted lived in the herd at 6th Duke of Bedford's Woburn Deer Park.
Gary Schwartz suggests the Kline "Self Portrait of Rembrandt with Gorget and Cap"compares to the well-known Uffizi "Self Portrait..."(see below);however that portrait has been officially downgraded to not Rembrandt.

“Head of a Moor” is reputed to be one of a group of 17 unrelated small-format head studies by Emile-Jean-Horace Vernet (see 2 examples attached). As preparatory works or oil sketches, these intimate works were not exhibited or sold and remained in the studio at the artist’s death.

The original Wouwerman painting, “The Blacksmith Shop” (ca. 1645) has for centuries been unlocated. Wouwerman specialist Dr. Birgit Schumacher has suggested that the Santa Fe Wouwerman, an 18th c. master's copy, is likely the closest to the original lost Wouwerman and likely painted from it.
