The stand of trees in the foreground, like visual sentries, reveal the zigzagging pathway of the river as it meanders through the verdant valley floor.

Going Home; Tehachapi, California
"The last rays of the sun illuminate the western sky over Tehachapi, casting a radiant amber light that colors the soft wool of the sheep as they return home. This serene moment captures the gentle harmony between nature and pastoral life, embodying a fleeting yet timeless scene."

The Blacksmith
A vivid slice of rural Western life, showcasing the blacksmith’s dedication and resilience as he hammers away at hot iron. The classical color palette, with its transparent dark tones and harmonious blend of black, white, and gray, unifies the composition and enhances its depth.

Mustard Field at Lake Perris, California
My study serves as the magic gate that places me back into the moment of observing what struck me first. I can experience that moment any time and it maybe years after I completed the study even if many memories of that time fade.

Eucalyptus Silhouette, C. 1915

Walking Leopard
“By exploring the forms in this piece, and given the simplicity of the gesture, I can directly address the concept of survival. A leopard has to keep walking forward in order to survive. Indeed, the thing that unites all life is the need to keep moving forward.” —Peter Brooke

Untitled (Snow-capped Mountains) – Grand Teton National Park, c. 1930s
This masterful plein air painting is a poetic interpretation of the snow-capped mountains in Grand Teton National Park in western Wyoming, framed by a stand of pine trees, an outcropping of rugged boulders ascending a steep hill, and the blue of Jackson Lake.

Interior with Mexican Chair
I like trying to paint that beautiful sense of space I see when painting a room. The overhead soft light I find so beautiful. I also liked including a couple of my paintings on the wall. I had painted the Mexican chair without anything on it.

Untitled - Eucalyptus Landscape, c. 1920s
The scene captures the essence of a shadowy forest setting with a stand of eucalyptus trees, a sunlit verdant valley in the middle distance, and a purple mountain range rising in the distant background.
Into the World

Curtis Creek; Sonora, California
Artist Statement "This wonderful spot is on a ranch just outside Sonora, Ca, in the foothills of the Sierra. An early rain when the fall color is at it’s peak is always a time to ones easel ready to catch that moment before the leaves drop and the water more than trickle." — Ray Roberts

Contemplation

A Glimpse of Beauty
The artist portrays his wife, Gloria, in an elegant and refined setting. The drape of her pink silk robe hearkens back to her Chinese ancestry and its contrasting embroidered border creates a diagonal line that exudes a feeling of strength.

Mountain Pines, c. 1930s
This view created en plein air of a trail meandering through a vertical stand of pine trees, reveals an inviting access point through an intimate forest, with an abstracted mountain range painted in deep blue in the far distance.

Mountain Landscape - Sierra Nevada, c. 1927
This painting, circa 1927, shows a beckoning trail meandering up and over a rocky slope dotted with pine, while heading in the direction of a distant mountain vista. Overall, a memorable interpretation of nature’s bounty and serenity in the remote Western landscape.

The two Miao girls depicted here are wearing their talents, as evidenced in their fine embroidered clothing and silver jewelry, in hopes of attracting prospective husbands.

Near La Cañada, c. 1930
The lower third of this landscape painting by Hanson Puthuff, created circa 1930, depicts the dry wash of the Arroyo Seco and the gently rolling green Verdugo foothills. In the middle ground are two Mediterranean-style homes barely visible as they are nestled among a grouping of trees.

Mian Situ portrays his wife, Gloria, as a woman of beauty, dignity, culture and grace. Sitting in a chair and perhaps engaged in conversation, her pearlescent silk Chinese robe with contrasting borders emphasizes her character as both demure and confident.

The Craft Sisters
Tender moment of Western country life, where two sisters are deeply engaged in crafting. Their focus and enjoyment are evident as they work together. The interplay of light and shadow adds a mysterious, almost theatrical quality to the scene, infusing it with a touch of magic.

Red Mustang, Bixby Bridge
For me, the classic red Mustang is a kind of symbol for simple freedom on the open road. In a way, the setting could be seen as rather timeless taking place anytime since the mid-1960s.
