Signed and dated "F. del Campo, Venezia, 1885" (mid lower left) Provenance: Private Collection, Toronto, purchased circa 1936 from the Cooling Gallery, London. Thence by descent to the present owner.
According to David Klein, author of "Edouard Cortes, Le Poete Parisien de la Peinture" (1999), this painting was created between 1920-1930. David writes: "Judging by the many characters in the painting and the year it was painted, this is a painting from his best period."
Created on 26 May 1933, plate 88 from the Vollard Suite, etching on large format Montval laid paper, with the "Galatea" watermark, an unsigned impression from the deluxe edition of 50 (printed before the regular edition of 260 on smaller format paper), with the Henri Petiet stamp on verso, printed by Lacouriere, Paris, the full sheet (15.1 x 19.75"/38.5 x 50.2cm).
