This determined the melancholic character of his work, in which his Monument to the Dead in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris, on which he worked for six years, stands out. Inaugurated in 1899, it is immediately comparable to the work we are now bidding for. It is characterised by its emotive, refined forms, which reveal the influence of his friend Puvis de Chavannes. His Girl Crying, inspired by Rondin's Dadaine, is also important.
