Following combat and the end of the war in Europe, I was stationed in Kirchdorf, Austria for several months in temporary occupation duty. This was in the fall of 1945, prior to returning home to Maryland. A fellow soldier and I had our portraits drawn by Mr. Bareis, with his signature and "Vienna-1945" noted. I recall that the cost was of a barter transaction, involving chocolate and cigarettes. The... Read full biography

This was in the fall of 1945, prior to returning home to Maryland. A fellow soldier and I had our portraits drawn by Mr. Bareis, with his signature and "Vienna-1945" noted. I recall that the cost was of a barter transaction, involving chocolate and cigarettes. The picture is about 12 x 20 inches and hangs in my den. Mr granddaughters cannot believe I was that handsome.
