Aly Ben Salem was born in Tunis in 1910 and attended the Ecole des Beaux-arts. He was a pupil of Armand Vergeaud and was known for his attachment to the traditions of his country, which he reproduced in the majority of his paintings. His works were similar to miniatures due to the meticulous rendering of characters and objects. He held his first personal exhibition in 1934 and won two first prizes in 1936. In 1937, Salem decorated the Tunisian Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Paris. During his stay in Paris, he discovered different schools of painting and exhibited at the Union Latin gallery. In 1939, he exhibited in Stockholm. Aly Ben Salem passed away in Stockholm in 2001.
