In 1913, he is recorded as living at Bournemouth, then at Parkstone, and Dorset in 1915 before finally setting in Poole for many years. He served as cadet in the Mercantile Marines, making several voyages on the "barquetine" Waterwitch, which was the last trading square rigger in British service at the time.
