At its height, the School was under the direction of Wilhelm von Schadow, and ultimately included many prominent American artists, including Worthington Whittredge, Albert Bierstadt, and George Caleb Bingham. Nordenburg studied under Theodor Hildebrandt and Adolph Tidemand, and briefly with Thomas Couture.
