He came to America in 1913, after having tried to support his impoverished family in Sweden. He had an early interest in art, which he had studied in Stockholm about 1906. Reportedly a portrait by Redin was hung at the Stockholm Royal Academy. For a short period, he lived in Chicago, where he worked "varnishing and enameling apartments for a building contractor."
