Carmelo Castellano was born in 1925 into a family of painters in Valencia. He was admitted to the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Valencia in 1944 and in 1949 he won the grand prize at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts for his work. Castellano was a prominent member of the "Groupo Z” who were avant garde painters of Valencia. In 1952 Castellano moved to Paris and set up his studios in the city.
